South African police are investigating allegations of sexual assault prior to the killing of white supremacist leader Eugene Terreblanche.

A lawyer for one of the two accused men said Terreblanche tried to have sex with at least one of the defendants.

Mr Terreblanche’s body was found on a bed with his trousers pulled down.

Police had initially said the killing was over a wage dispute, but are now exploring the possibility that the killing was an act of self-defence.

“We are not going to focus on one thing,” said Musa Zondi of the Hawks, South Africa’s elite criminal investigation unit, which has taken over the investigation.

“We will investigate all pertinent facts that have a bearing on the matter.”

University of Missouri police yesterday arrested two white male students suspected of dropping cotton balls in front of the Gaines/Oldham Black Culture Center on campus.

Zachary Tucker, 21, and Sean Fitzgerald, 19, were arrested about 7:30 p.m., each on suspicion of one count of tampering in the second degree, a Class D felony enhanced because of the hate crime classification. They each posted $4,500 bond and were released from the Boone County Jail, with a date to return to court set for March 29.

Tucker is listed as a senior psychology major in an MU directory and is from St. Louis. Fitzgerald is a freshman political science major from Kearney and is listed as an NROTC midshipman.

Chancellor Brady Deaton has temporarily suspended the students, saying he “determined it is in the best interest of the university community.” Further action will depend on the outcome of a formal student conduct process.

MU police were called to the black culture center Friday morning after students and staff awoke to find cotton balls strewn across the lawn. The racist act, an overt reminder of slavery, came on one of the last days of Black History Month.

For more than a century, Negrohead Mountain has towered over the countryside north of Malibu, offering unrivalled views of the Pacific to generations of hikers. But this week, at the stroke of a bureaucrat’s pen, the striking landmark’s time-honoured name disappeared from local maps.

The 2,031ft summit will henceforth be known as Ballard Mountain, a name deemed to be more in keeping with the modern era. The new title honours a blacksmith and former slave called John Ballard, who was among the first men to settle in its foothills in 1880, after fleeing Los Angeles to escape persecution by segregationist police officers.

A hundred people attended the renaming ceremony for the peak, including Ballard’s great-grandson Reggie, a retired fireman, who told reporters that the US Geological Survey’s decision to approve the altered name “means a lot to me”, adding: “It’s not often you get the chance to right a historical wrong.”

But while few at the event begrudged well-meaning locals the chance to remove a racial slur from their footpath signs, the move wasn’t universally well received. Behind the scenes, the renaming of Negrohead Mountain marked the latest step in a controversial trend. After years of blithely ignoring the often unfortunate derivation of many of the nation’s place names, America is slowly rebranding its landmarks. And historians fear that the push to replace colourful words or phrases with “acceptable” alternatives is seeing the nation’s heritage sacrificed at the altar of political correctness.

The woman who falsely accused three Duke University lacrosse players of rape nearly four years ago has been charged with attempted murder, arson and other counts after a fight with her boyfriend, police said.

Crystal Mangum, 31, was arrested late Wednesday on charges including assaulting her boyfriend, Durham police said in a press release.

Durham County jail records indicate she also was charged with identity theft, communicating threats, damage to property, resisting an officer and misdemeanor child abuse. A judge ordered that she remain in jail on a $1 million bond. Mangum had no attorney listed Thursday.

Samson Ojo, 24, is charged with rape and kidnapping after police say he attacked a woman inside a movie theater on Sunday.

A 21-year old woman said Ojo followed her to the bathroom and forced her into an empty theater where the sexual assault took place. “It’s not good, it’s horrible feeling like this,” said the alleged victim during an exclusive interview with FOX 8.

Police said Ojo was at the Cinemark Theater on Lexington-Springmill Road with his wife and step-children. Chief Smith said Ojo made eye contact with his alleged victim before he followed her out of one theater and pulled her into an empty theater.

Police say the suspect’s wife was very cooperative and confirmed that her husband left the theater more than once and she tried to call him on his cell phone. “The thing that makes me the most sick about it, is that he went and sat back down like nothing had happened,” said the 21-year old woman.

Some people in Italy believe foreign-born residents are the main cause of crime in the country, according to a poll by Ispo published in Corriere della Sera. 35 per cent of respondents share this view.

Additionally, 44 per cent of respondents say all illegal immigrants should be expelled, even if they have not committed any crime or misdeeds, and 34 per cent disagree with the idea that immigrants are necessary for the national economy.

The Republican Jewish Coalition called foul Monday on the National Jewish Democratic Council after the group criticized GOP leaders and an Illinois Republican Senate candidate for failing, in its estimation, to repudiate anti-Semitic rhetoric.

The NJDC wrapped its’ criticism of the GOP in a statement declaring that it had “launched a ‘pledge campaign’ to demand that federal candidates condemn and refrain from ‘abusive Holocaust rhetoric and anti-Semitic language.’”

The NJDC offered specific praise for the candidates seeking the Illinois Democratic Senate nomination, while at the same time disparaging Rep. Mark Kirk, R-Illinois, for not embracing their language. Kirk is running for the Republican Senate nomination.

On top of that, Democrats nationwide appear to be facing a backlash from voters, witnessed most recently in the Massachusetts special election, in which Republican Scott Brown beat Democrat Martha Coakley for the seat formerly held by the late Sen. Ted Kennedy.

“We’re seeing a collapse of support for the organized Democratic Party … in places that we never thought would happen,” Kirk said, citing the Massachusetts election. “I think that will happen in Illinois as well.”

Democrats surely don’t want to see a Bay State election repeat.

Thousands of immigrant rights advocates marched in front of a county jail in Phoenix Saturday in a protest that was aimed at Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio’s immigration efforts and was marked by a clash between a small group of protesters and police officers.

Organizers say the protest was meant to show officials in Washington that Arpaio shouldn’t handle immigration enforcement, and that Congress and the Obama administration need to come up with a way for immigrant workers to come to the country legally.

The vast majority of people in Italy would like all immigrants seeking citizenship to take a test of Italian civic values, according to a poll by Arnaldo Ferrari Nasi. 80.2 per cent of respondents share this view.

Additionally, 76.9 per cent of respondents say immigrants who do not share Italian values or commit crimes should be stripped of their citizenship. On the other hand, 79.2 per cent of respondents want immigrants who contribute to a city’s economy to be allowed to vote in municipal elections.
